Details Vlamertinghe
is a village and commune in the Province of West Flanders, on the road and the
railway between Poperinghe and Ypres. Brandhoek is a hamlet on the road about
1 ½ miles from Vlamertinghe station and 2 ½ from Poperinghe station,
and its three Cemeteries are on the South side of the village During the War,
Brandhoek, was within the comparatively safe area which ended at Vlamertinghe
Church, and Field Ambulances were posted there continiuously. The Military cemetery
was opened early in May 1915, in a field adjoining the Dressing Stastion, and
closed in July 1917. It contains the bodies of 597 soldiers of the United Kingdom;
63 from Canada, 4 from Australia and 2 of the Bermuda Volunteer Rifle Corps (who
fought with the 1sr Lincolnshire Regiment); and 2 German soldiers are buried in
it. In July 1917 the casualties of the British offensive in Flanders and the arrival
of the 32nd, 3rd Australian end 44th Casualty Clearing Stations made it necessary
to open the New Military Cemetery, 300 yards away. The graves in this Cemetery
are of July and August 1917; they contain the remains of 514 soldiers from the
United Kingdom, 11 from Australia and 6 from Canada, and those of 28 German Prisoners
of War. In the middle of August 1917 the New Military Cemetery nr 3, opposite
the New Military, was opened; for this Cemetery a separate Register has been published. The
Military Cemetery is surrounded by a low rubble wall, a thorn hedge, and a double
row of willows, and covers about 3600 square yards. The New Military Cemetery
is long and narrow, and is surrounded by a low rubble wall, and the War Stone,
at the North-East end, is backed by willows. It covers about 1500 square yards.
