Ferme-Olivier Cemetery, Elverdinghe (W.Flanders)

Details

This Cemetery lies on the south side of the road from Poperinghe to Elverdinghe, about 1 1/2 kilometres west of Elverdinghe. It is 5 1/2 kilometres from Poperinghe Station, 4 3/4 kilometres from Vlamertinghe Station, and 7 from Ypres Station. It is approached from the road. It contains 407 British graves and 3 German.

The Great War Stone is placed on the east side of the Cemetery, and the Cross at the North West corner. The boundaries are defined by pollarded willows.

The Cemetery was used continuously between the 9th June, 1915 and the 5th August, 1917, the 62nd,16th, 9th, 11th, 129th and 130th Field ambulances successively having a Dressing Station close by. The burials in Plots 1 and 2 range from June, 1915, to June, 1917 , and they are not grouped in order of date; they include a large number of graves in Plot 2, Row E, containing the remains of 41 men of the 3rd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment, who were killed on parade in December, 1915, by one shell from a naval gun in Houthulst Forest. The graves in Plot 3 run in order of date of death, and show the successive occupations of Elverdinghe Chateau by the 38th (Welsh) Division, the Guards Division, and units of the Roval Artillery. Until the British advance in July, 1917, the Cemetery was considered to lie just outside, and the village just within, the area generally covered by German shell fire.
